Inside the chamber, the painted stone figure of the patron saint of Amarante, Sao Gonçalo lies, his head laid on red tasseled pillows. It is here that women pray to Sao Gonçalo for a husband. (Doesn't 'Amarante' have some connection to the word 'amore' - love?) History has it that in the 13th century, Gonçalo, a saintly preacher visited this town, fell in love with the place, and built a hermitage. The town slowly grew, and much of its success is attributed to him. |
