Cascais is filled to the brim with restaurants, each
vying with the other for customers. We decided to try some Chinese food in
Portugal, and came across one solitary Chinese restaurant in Cascais. It was 8:30 p.m. and we were one of 3 couples
in the vast dining room. Noticing the lack of clientele, we figured it was
either because it had a dubious reputation, or that the cuisine just
didn't go down too well with the locals. The meal was decent - a curious
fusion of Chino-Portuguese - the 'spicy' chicken was mild, and had been
sautéed in red wine, and came with several chestnuts. By the the time we
finished paying our bill, the restaurant was crammed to capacity with
boisterous young people, wine and beer-guzzling tourists. The smoke-filled
air was choking us to death ... it looked like business was booming for
the Cantonese!
It was a full moon night, and as we walked homeward chewing on the walnut
cake we'd bought earlier from the pastelaria. The bay looked serene and at
rest. |
