[Pombal apparently failed miserably to teach punctuality to the
Portuguese - he imported
several hundred clocks from England for use in government offices, but
these were almost immediately sent for storage in church sacristies. But he did
manage to abolish slavery, liberalize the University, and did much for
education in general]
